An accomplished actor, playwright, director, theatre scholar and teacher, Mr. Mathews has taught drama at Julliard, the American Conservatory Theatre, and he is an Emeritus Professor of English at California State University at Hayward. Matthews has served as the Artistic Director of the Berkeley Shakespeare Festival and the California Actors Theatre, and is an Associate Artist of the Old Globe Theatre. He is also a founding member of John Houseman's Acting Company and the Antaeus Company. Matthews is a multiple award-winning stage actor, earning a Los Angeles Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of C.S. Lewis in the South Coast Repertory production of "Shadowlands." For his recent adaptation of HENRY IV at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre (in which both he and Kevin Kline performed) he was awarded the Tony, the Drama Desk and the Equity Awards. His numerous television movies and miniseries including "And the Band Played On," "Baby M," and "White Mile." He appeared in more than seventy episodic television programs. As a series regular, Matthews has starred in "Down Home" with Judith Ivey and, most recently, "The Jeff Foxworthy Show."
