How Theatrical Elements Communicate

A Seminar by John Sheehan

Director John Sheehan gave an illuminating talk illustrating that every element of the theatre is actually communicating to the audience. Whether it’s the curtain hung upstage, the blue spotlight on the actor’s face, the pace of an exit, or the color of the costume, it is the job of the artists involved in the production – not just the actors, but the set designer, lighting designer, sound designer, costumer, and all other collaborators involved – to focus the audience’s attention in such a way that the story it told and the unique perspective of the production shared.
