Building a Cabaret

A Workshop by Linda Purl

Cabaret is one of the most intimate forms of musical theatre. Performed in a cozy setting where audience and performer are no farther away that the length of a living room, the Cabaret is also elegant, sexy, psychologically honest and emotionally revealing. But Cabarets don’t “just happen” any more than do other art forms. Using her own twenty of experience as a cabaret performer, Linda shares the entire process, from choosing material, to acting the text. Then she turns the tables and invites apprentices to work with her on a song of their choice. No singing lesson is involved. And apprentices don’t necessarily have to sing, but can speak their songs. This is about getting at the sub-text as one would with a monologue, and sharing a moment of extremely personal history with an audience. The seminar concludes with a special treat – Linda singing one of her cabaret songs a capella.
